He was a member of the editorial board of Materials Characterization. He is currently on the editorial boards of Praktische Metallographie, Metallography, Microstructure and Analysis, Image Analysis and Stereology and the Intl. Journal of Microstructure and Materials Properties. George has taught 87 ASM Metals Engineering Institute courses since 1977, has given 117 seminars and workshops for Buehler and 71 for various technical societies, universities and companies, and he has given over 450 lectures in 42 countries. He created 8 ASTM standards and has revised many more. He is a fellow of ASMI, ASTM and the IFHTSE, was named a distinguished life member and fellow of Alpha Sigma Mu honorary society and is an honorary member of the Polish Society for Stereology. He received 36 awards for his microscopy work including the Jacquet-Lucas Grand Prize and the Dubose-Crouse Award of the International Metallographic Contest.

Dr. Martin Adel Makary, M.D., M.P.H., is a highly distinguished Surgical Oncologist and Chief of the Johns Hopkins Islet Transplant Center. He is a clinical lead for the Johns Hopkins Sibley Innovation Hub and the Executive Director of Improving Wisely, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation project designed to lower health care costs in the U.S. by creating measures of appropriateness in health care. Dr. Makary is also Mark Ravitch Chair in Gastrointestinal Surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and teaches public health policy as a Professor of Surgery and Public Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Revered for focusing on the creation and evaluation of new health care innovations, Dr. Makary researched and wrote articles on the prevention of surgical complications. He published on frailty as a medical condition, on safety, and teamwork culture in medicine. This research led him to create and publish The Surgery Checklist during his first few years at John Hopkins. After developing the checklist, he served on the Safe Surgery Saves Lives Committee of the World Health Organization (W.H.O.). Dr. Makary also led the W.H.O. workgroup to create its official global measures of surgical quality and checklist. His creation garnered further popularity in the best-selling book The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande. Dr. Makary is the founder of the Johns Hopkins Center for Surgical Outcomes Research and Clinical Trials and is the recipient of numerous grants to evaluate the effectiveness of new surgical techniques and new interventions in health care. As an advocate for disruptive innovation in medicine and physician-led initiatives, Dr. Makary pioneered new pancreas operations at Johns Hopkins. As one of the few highest-volume laparoscopic pancreas surgeons in the United States, he performed the first series of laparoscopic islet auto-transplantation and other laparoscopic operations in the surgical field, for which he received the Nobility in Science Award by the National Pancreas Foundation.

Patricia’s original doctoral research excelled in the area of Manic Depression/Bipolar Disorders and her doctoral thesis receives numerous and continuing applauded citations. Dr. Broderick continued to achieve. Patricia’s Postdoctoral and Research Associate Fellowships were awarded at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Cornell University Medical School (1982-1986) and her creativity in medicine is clear as Patricia invented the patented and trademarked BRODERICK PROBE® biosensors early on and she presented cutting edge work at the New York Academy of Sciences during her postdoctoral years. The Honorable Dr. Dale Pierre Layman, AS, BS, MS, EdS, PhD #1, PhD #2, Grand PhD in Medicine, MOIF, FABI, DG, DDG, LPIBA, IOM, AdVMed, AGE, is the Founder and President of Robowatch, LLC. (The website is at www.robowatch.info)  Robowatch is an international non-profit group whose main purpose is to keep a watchful HUMAN eye on the fast-moving developments occurring in the fields of robotics, computing and Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) industries. The members of this group are advocates for human rights and serve to inform and protect the masses against the continued advancement of robotics that are leading to a negative impact on society. Dr. Layman, as President, represents the culmination of decades of education, experience, and knowledge. The Hon. Layman was the very first person in his family to attend college. In 1968, he was awarded an Associate of Science (AS) degree in Life Science, from Lake Michigan College.  The same year, he won a Michigan Public Junior College Transfer Scholarship to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In 1971, he received an Interdepartmental  B.S. with Distinction, in Anthropology - Zoology, from the University of Michigan.  From 1971 to 1972, Layman was employed as a Histological Technician in the Department of Neuropathology, under “Connie and Dr. Hicks,” at the University of Michigan Medical School. From 1972 to 1974, he attended classes in the Physiology Department of the U of M Medical School.  He was also employed as a Teaching Fellow of Human Physiology, during this period.  For these efforts, the Hon. Layman was awarded an M.S. in Physiology from the University of Michigan, in 1974.

David Lee is an American Physicist and Professor at Texas A&M University, located in College Station, Texas.  Utilizing six decades of experience, Dr. Lee is a prominent physics educator who has been a distinguished professor of physics at Texas A&M University in College Station since 2009, having previously been a James Gilbert White distinguished professor of the physical sciences at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, from 1999 to 2009. Prior to these illustrious roles, he served Cornell University in multiple capacities, including instructor of physics, assistant professor of physics, associate professor of physics and professor of physics between January 1959 and 1999. Alongside his primary endeavors, he was a visiting professor at several universities, including Peking University in Beijing, China, the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla, and the University of Florida in Gainesville. Likewise, Dr. Lee was a visiting scientist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in the late 1960s and chair municipale of Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble, France in the early 1990s.. Lee is most renowned for his co-discovery of superfluid helium-3 along with Douglas Osheroff and the late Robert Richardson in 1972. This work also involved one of the first applications of magnetic resonance imaging to a physics experiment before it became an important medical tool. In another series of experiments, he discovered spin waves in spin polarized hydrogen gas. He also discovered a density maximum in liquid helium-3 and made extensive measurements of the phase diagram of liquid and solid helium-3, helium-4 mixtures. His work on superconducting tunneling in cadmium-alumninum junctions was one of the first studies of this phenomenon below the temperature of one Kelvin degree above absolute zero. More recently he observed collective sound modes in superfluid helium-3 which obeyed the Nambu identity and is analogous to the Higgs Phenomenon in elementary particle physics.

He began working as a manager of compensation and personnel research for Pfizer, Inc. Bruce was immediately recognized for his business acumen and continued to rise through the ranks before taking on various executive roles within the company. He most recently filled the capacity of World-Wide Head of Human Resources.  a well-respected and decorated professional, Bruce is also a speaker in his field of expertise, and was a member of standing committees with Pfizer, Inc. from 1985 to 1996. He has contributed more than one hundred articles to professional journals and delivered more than four hundred presentations in addition to appearing on radio and television. Since 1978, he has authored ten books as well as served on the advisory board of numerous publications. In recognition of his professional excellence, Bruce has received countless honors. He received lifetime achievement awards from Marquis Who’s Who, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and WorldatWork. In 1995, he was named Person of the Year by the University of Wisconsin Alumni Club in New York, as well as HR Executive of the Year by Human Resource Executive Magazine. Most recently, Bruce received the Distinguished Business Alumnus Award from the University of Wisconsin School of Business. Committed to expanding his professional knowledge base, Bruce is an elite member of the National Academy of Human Resources. Having a great appreciation for his alma mater, Bruce established the Bruce R. Ellig Distinguished Chair in Pay and Organizational Effectiveness in the School of Business. While the chair is designed to recruit and retain faculty. Additionally, he established and funded the Bruce R. Ellig Scholarship Fund.  Bruce hopes it will provide students with the tools to succeed far beyond their academic years. Aside from the demands of his career, Bruce enjoys reading and traveling.

Cover Feature: Dr. Dan Andreae

Dr. Daniel Andreae is an award winning academic, Executive Director, citizen, volunteer and community leader. He has been both an Adjunct Associate Professor  and Fellow at Renison University College, University of Waterloo and a Professor of Psychology at the University of Guelph Humber in Toronto. Over his distinguished teaching career he has taught 45 different subjects at university and college. A strong believer in lifelong learning he has completed certificates and diplomas in such areas as advanced stress management, psychophysiology and heart rate variability. He has studied at the Benson/ Henry Mind/Body Institute in Boston affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital and was granted membership in the Harvard Medical Association Postgraduate Association ( Continuing Education). He is interested in stress and hypertension among other areas of preventive medicine. Dr. Andreae has been a pioneer throughout his career helping to launch the National Eating Disorder Center within the University Health Network in Toronto and currently serves as Honourary Patron of their Advisory Committee. He was also the first Executive Director of the Alzheimer Society of Toronto, the first Society formed anywhere in the world and more recently served as Chair of their Patrons Council. He is  the Patron of Brain Injury Canada and has the honor of having a neuroscience laboratory named for him at the Weizmann Institute of Science one of the world’s acknowledged leading science and educational research institutions.
